Open space is a modern arrangement of rooms that are functional and connected to each other, maximizing the use of usable space.

In the past, houses and apartments had separate hallways, living rooms, and kitchens, as well as often a separate area with bedrooms. The kitchen was often isolated, at the end of the apartments, serving exclusively for food preparation, and the person in the kitchen was isolated from the rest of the family and friends.

At the end of the 20th century, the concept of space arrangement changed due to the need for the kitchen to be the center of events. The idea was to connect the living room, workspace, dining area, and kitchen into one unique whole, allowing family members to enjoy socializing and food preparation at the same time. The person preparing food could be at the center of events, following children’s activities and socializing with the rest of the family. Other household members could participate in the cooking process or simply keep them company.

The advantages of the open space concept are numerous:

1. the space itself becomes larger and more functional,

2. natural light freely reaches all rooms,

3. the concept provides flexibility in interior arrangement.

The dining table and chairs are most often those that connect the kitchen with the living room, but the use of a bar and kitchen islands is also an excellent choice for spatially connecting the kitchen area with the rest of the living room.

The bar will visually separate the kitchen from the living room, and it can serve as a workspace as well as a dining area. The choice of the bar’s appearance is up to you. It can be rounded, which contributes to a more modern look of the space itself, or in an “L” shape, where one part will serve as a workspace and the other for sitting.

The open space concept is ideal for socializing, connecting all household members in daily activities, and with smart design, small living spaces become visually larger and more functional.
