Small apartments are ideal for maintenance and renovation at lower costs for owners. However, their surface area and room layout require a bit more effort and thought when purchasing furniture and choosing appropriate color tones.

You can hire an interior designer, or you can engage yourself and play around with decorating your homes. Here are some tips you should follow when decorating smaller apartments.

1. Define the space in the apartment

An open space in a small apartment, without the division of “rooms” for different purposes, can make your homes appear cluttered and overwhelmed.“Crvena jabuka”, a custom furniture manufacturing company, advises that you define your space by delineating areas and rooms that have their own purposes. One way to achieve this is by placing display cases/shoe cabinets near the entrance, thereby spatially defining the hallway. You can separate the space between the kitchen and dining room with a bar. Define the living room space with a sofa that is color-contrasting (for example, bright yellow or emerald green) from the rest of the furniture, which will draw attention and visually define the living room space as soon as you enter the small apartment.

2. Consider acquiring multifunctional furniture

When it comes to small spaces, every square meter counts. Utilize the available spaces in each room of the small apartment by investing in furniture that serves multiple functions.

Furnish the living room with a set/sofa that does not take up too much available space during the day and does not obstruct your movement and functioning in the apartment, but allows you to “convert” the living room into a bedroom at night, for example, for guests.

Just be mindful of the measurements; everything must fit perfectly in your space to avoid having the opposite effect.

3. Vertical furniture in a small apartment

The key thing when furnishing a small apartment is to focus on vertical furniture as much as horizontal furniture.

The more you utilize the upper parts of the room, the more space you will have left for extravagant solutions in the lower parts. Tall and narrow pieces are your best allies in gaining plenty of storage space in small areas.

4. Choose pastel and light tones for wooden furniture and walls

Light shades visually give width to the space, while bright and dark colors narrow it down.

“Crvena Jabuka” provides an example of an excellent color choice solution for your small apartments – a combination of pastel gray with soft blue, or white combined with the color of white coffee. Use no more than three colors, and they should be from the same palette.

5. Avoid purchasing bulky furniture

You may like the look of bulky furniture, but it would not be an ideal solution in your small apartments. Besides taking up too much space, such furniture would hinder your movement and daily functioning in the apartment, especially the play and movement of children throughout the apartment.

The advice is to consider smaller furniture, in more effective tones that will complement the space in the small apartment and at the same time make it a warm and harmonious living space.
